What is HST?

The Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) merges the federal GST with a provincial portion into one combined rate, charged and remitted as a single tax rather than as two separate line items. Ontario, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, and Prince Edward Island use HST. The rate varies by province (13%–15%) because each sets its own provincial portion.

Why did Nova Scotia's rate change?

Nova Scotia lowered its HST from 15% to 14% effective April 1, 2025, reducing the provincial portion from 10% to 9% — the first time a province has voluntarily cut its own share of HST since harmonization began in 1997. Provincial portions do change from time to time; this page is kept in sync with the current published rate.

HST provinces don't bill GST and PST separately — the whole amount is charged as one HST rate. The federal/provincial split shown here is how the CRA divides the revenue, not two line items on a receipt.

How to calculate HST

Adding HST: Tax = price × rate. Total = price + tax.

Removing HST from a total: Price = total ÷ (1 + rate). Tax = total − price.

Worked example: New Brunswick, 15% HST

A $250 purchase in New Brunswick: tax = $250 × 0.15 = $37.50. Total = $250 + $37.50 = $287.50. Working backwards from that $287.50 total: price = $287.50 ÷ 1.15 = $250.00, tax = $287.50 − $250.00 = $37.50.

Frequently asked questions

Which provinces charge HST?
Ontario (13%), Nova Scotia (14%), New Brunswick (15%), Newfoundland and Labrador (15%) and Prince Edward Island (15%).
Is HST the same as GST plus PST?
Conceptually yes — it's the federal GST and a provincial share combined into one rate — but it's billed and remitted as a single tax, not two.
Why do HST rates differ between provinces?
The federal 5% portion is the same everywhere, but each HST province sets its own provincial portion, which is why the combined rate ranges from 13% to 15%.
Why did Nova Scotia's HST rate change?
Nova Scotia cut its HST from 15% to 14% on April 1, 2025 — the first province to voluntarily lower its own share of HST since harmonization began in 1997.
Does HST apply to services as well as goods?
Yes — HST applies to most goods and services, with the same exemptions (basic groceries, most health care, long-term rent) as GST elsewhere in Canada.
Do I charge my province's HST rate or the customer's?
Generally the rate that applies where the customer takes possession of the goods or service, not where your business is based.
